The name Donnafugata, meaning "fleeing woman" in Italian, is derived from the Greek myth of a woman who found refuge in the Sicilian hills, where the winery is now located. The winery was founded in 1983 by the Rallo family, who have been producing wine in Sicily for five generations. Today, the winery is run by siblings José and Antonio Rallo, who continue to honor their family's tradition of winemaking while also introducing modern techniques and innovation.

Donnafugata is located in the DOCG of Contessa Entellina, in the heart of western Sicily. This region is known for its diverse terroir, with a variety of soils and microclimates that allow for the production of a wide range of grape varieties. The winery also has vineyards in the prestigious appellations of Etna, Pantelleria, and Vittoria, further highlighting the diversity and quality of their wines.
