The 2023 Montrachet Grand Cru is broad and dramatic, bursting with aromas of peach, white flowers, honeycomb, nutmeg and vanilla pod. Full-bodied, layered and unctuous, with a fleshy, enveloping core of fruit that's girdled by lively acids, it's a terrific wine that wears its heart on its sleeve.
Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine des Comtes Lafon has a clean and fresh bouquet, perhaps just a bit too much lime for my liking, although there is mineralité tucked in just behind. The palate is fresh and saline on the entry with a superb line of acidity. There is weight and presence to this Montrachet, and it gains weight and delivers a knockout, extremely persistent finish tinged with lemon thyme and sherbet. Though a little disjointed at present, I suspect this will turn into a wonderful Montrachet with style and class. But be warned that it will require several years in bottle.

Domaine Des Comtes Lafon is a renowned wine producer located in the Burgundy region of France. The estate is situated in the village of Meursault, which is known for producing some of the finest Chardonnay wines in the world. The domaine was founded in 1834 and has been in the hands of the Lafon family for over five generations.

The domaine's vineyards cover a total area of 13 hectares, with 11 hectares dedicated to Chardonnay and the remaining 2 hectares to Pinot Noir. The vineyards are planted on the famous limestone and marl soils of Burgundy, known as "terroir," which contribute to the unique character and quality of the wines produced by Domaine Des Comtes Lafon.

One of the most significant factors that sets Domaine Des Comtes Lafon apart from other Burgundy producers is their commitment to biodynamic farming practices. Since 1998, the estate has been certified biodynamic, meaning that all farming is done in harmony with the natural rhythms of the earth and the lunar calendar. This approach allows the grapes to reach their full potential and express the unique terroir of the region in the resulting wines.

In addition to their dedication to biodynamic farming, Domaine Des Comtes Lafon also follows traditional winemaking techniques, with a focus on minimal intervention in the cellar. This allows the wines to showcase the purity and complexity of the fruit, resulting in elegant and balanced wines that are highly sought after by wine enthusiasts around the world.

The wines of Domaine Des Comtes Lafon are classified as both Meursault and Meursault Premier Cru, with the most notable premier cru being "Les Perrieres." These wines are known for their rich and complex flavors, with notes of citrus, stone fruits, and a distinct minerality that is characteristic of the Meursault region.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.
