Pinotage is a unique red grape variety created in South Africa in 1925 through the crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (then called Hermitage in South Africa). Developed by Professor Abraham Perold at Stellenbosch University, this hybrid was designed to combine Pinot Noir's elegance with Cinsaut's ability to thrive in warm climates. South Africa remains the grape's primary home, with Stellenbosch serving as the heartland of quality Pinotage production.
Pinotage wines typically display a distinctive flavor profile that ranges from bright red fruit characteristics in cooler vintages to rich, smoky notes in warmer expressions. The grape often produces wines with aromas of plums, blackberries, and distinctive earthy or smoky undertones that can include hints of banana, coffee, or chocolate. Young Pinotage tends toward medium body with moderate tannins, while older vines and careful winemaking can yield more structured, age-worthy wines with greater complexity.
Stellenbosch has established itself as the premier region for Pinotage, where the Mediterranean climate and diverse soils allow the grape to express both power and finesse. The variety pairs well with grilled meats, game, and traditional South African braai dishes, where its smoky characteristics complement charred flavors. Pinotage's versatility also extends to rosé production and blending, where it contributes color, fruit, and its characteristic earthy complexity.
