Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris is a white wine grape that emerged as a pink-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir in Burgundy, France. The variety spread throughout Europe over centuries, finding particular success in Alsace, where it became known for producing full-bodied, aromatic wines. It also established itself in northern Italy as Pinot Grigio, and later found homes in cooler climate regions worldwide where it could maintain its natural acidity while developing complexity.

The grape produces wines with distinctive smoky, honeyed aromas often accompanied by notes of pear, apple, and spice. Pinot Gris typically yields medium to full-bodied whites with moderate acidity and an oily, rich texture that distinguishes it from lighter varieties. The wines can range from crisp and mineral-driven to richly textured and complex, depending on winemaking techniques and terroir. Late-harvest versions develop concentrated sweetness while maintaining the grape's characteristic weight and aromatic intensity.

Alsace remains the variety's most celebrated region, where it achieves remarkable depth and longevity, particularly in Grand Cru vineyards with favorable exposures. The wines pair naturally with rich fish dishes, poultry, and pork, while their texture and complexity make them suitable companions for dishes with cream-based sauces or mild spices. Pinot Gris also shows promise in unexpected regions, where winemakers blend it with other varieties to add body and aromatic complexity to white wine blends.
