Clairette is a white grape variety native to southern France, particularly the Provence and Rhône regions. It has been cultivated in this part of the Mediterranean for centuries, thriving in the warm, dry climate and limestone soils characteristic of the south. The variety is traditionally associated with the coastal appellations of Provence, where it remains an important component of regional white blends, though it has also found a place in some Rhône Valley wines.
Clairette produces dry white wines with moderate alcohol and good acidity. The wines typically display citrus and floral notes, with a crisp, refreshing character suited to the warm regions where it grows. It is rarely bottled as a single varietal wine; instead, it functions as a blending grape, adding freshness and structural balance to multi-varietal compositions. The grape's natural acidity and neutral flavor profile make it a useful counterpoint to riper or more aromatic varieties in a blend.
Clairette is most prominent in Cassis, a small appellation on the Provence coast east of Marseille, where it appears in white blends alongside varieties such as Bourboulenc and Marsanne. It is also used in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where it contributes to white bottlings in supporting roles. These wines pair well with seafood, particularly shellfish and light fish preparations, and with Mediterranean herb-forward dishes where the wine's crisp acidity complements bright, fresh flavors.
