Plymouth Gin Distillery

Plymouth Gin is produced at the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, Devon, a working distillery with roots stretching back several centuries, making it one of the oldest in England. Plymouth Gin holds a geographical indication, meaning that by legal definition it can only be produced within the city of Plymouth. The spirit is made using a traditional copper pot still and a blend of seven botanicals, including juniper, coriander seed, orange peel, lemon peel, green cardamom, angelica root, and orris root.

The style is distinctly different from London Dry Gin. Plymouth Gin is characterised by a slightly earthier, rounder profile, with the root botanicals — particularly angelica and orris — more prominent than in many other English gins. The water used in production is drawn from Dartmoor, which is notably soft and low in minerals, contributing to the gin's smooth texture. Historically, Plymouth Gin was closely associated with the British Royal Navy and appeared in early cocktail recipes, including the original formula for the Pink Gin.
