Abbaye de Lerins

Abbaye de Lerins is a monastery located on Saint-Honorat, one of the Lérins Islands off the coast of Cannes in the south of France. The island has been home to a Cistercian monastic community for centuries, and the monks have maintained viticulture as part of their agricultural tradition. Wines produced here fall under the Méditerranée IGP, a broad appellation covering much of southern France that allows for considerable flexibility in grape varieties and winemaking approaches.

The Méditerranée IGP encompasses vineyards across Provence and beyond, where the climate is characteristically warm and dry, shaped by the Mediterranean Sea and the mistral wind. These conditions favour grape varieties that thrive in heat and well-drained soils, and Syrah in particular performs well across southern France, producing wines that can range from structured and peppery to richer, fruit-forward styles depending on site and winemaking decisions.

The Saint-Honorat label represents the monastery's wine production, with Syrah as the grape variety used in their red wine. Given the island's relatively small scale and monastic context, production is limited, and the wines reflect both the maritime influence of the surrounding sea and the character of Provençal viticulture more broadly.
