Aged in oak for 24 months, the Dal Forno Romano 2016 Valpolicella Superiore is an elegantly polished and balanced wine. However, this quality did come at a steep price. A hail storm on May 18th, 2015, damaged 90% of the leaves in the vineyard. The plants therefore used all the energy they had in reserve, and the 2016 vintage started off with difficulty. By June, they were struggling, resulting in lower yields but excellent quality. In fact, the estate released the 2017 vintage before 2016, allowing for more bottle time.
Valpolicella is a renowned wine district in northeastern Italy, located in the province of Verona. The primary grape variety in Valpolicella is Corvina, a native Italian grape, which is blended with other local varieties to enhance color and tannin structure. Valpolicella wines can carry the 'Superiore' designation if they have a minimum alcohol content of 12% and undergo at least one year of aging.
Dal Forno Romano Valpolicella Superiore is crafted from a blend of Corvina, Rondinella, Coratina, and Oseleta grapes, which are air-dried for 45 days. Following rigorous quality control, pressing, and fermentation, the wine is aged for 24 months before being filtered and bottled. It is then left to mature for an additional 36 months, ensuring exceptional depth and complexity before release.
Coming from a semi-drying with the same refinement as for Amarone, this Valpolicella Valpolicella Superiore Monte Lodoletta 2017 is overflowing with dense concentration and an inky color. This 2017 vintage features a pungent nose of violets, amarena cherry, dried fig and lightly charred oak. Some caramel notes emerge with the air, accompanied by more pressed flowers. Complete and penetrating, less full-bodied than full-bodied, it envelops the palate with silky, fine and polished tannins. This Valpolicella Superiore is very impressive!
